Program Overview
Music Business

Your mentor for the program (Scott Barkham) will guide you through the ins and outs of the music business in 2018 to help you find the path that works best for you so you can release your music into the world with maximum impact.  Scott has nearly three decades of experience and success across multiple facets of the music industry–as a record company executive, professional musician, music television talent executive and as an artist manager.  He has seen the business change drastically, and has been able to pivot in order to maintain a career that has been consistently successful.

Starting with several years working closely with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artist Steely Dan, Scott learned early in his career how to relate to and work with talent.  This skill has served him well over the years, as a talent executive for Fuse, A&R for Jake Records (Interscope), and for the past ten years as an artist manager where he has been able to guide the careers of the multi-Grammy nominated Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote (Sony Music), Rich Medina, and many others.

Scott is the complete manager–not limited to any one type of artist, or one metric of success.  The world famous artists, producers and DJ’s who work with him are successful in their own terms.  Some of them make records and tour the world, some DJ around the world, and others stay home and produce records that are respected worldwide.

Scott is here to help YOU find YOUR the best path that makes sense for you and can help you make real PROGRESS with your art and your aspiring career.  This course isn’t limited to recording artists — Scott can help you if you’re breaking into the business as a manager or a producer.

The program is for you if:

Program Contents

The Program is Divided Into 3 Courses

1

Music Business Foundations
The music business is constantly changing and adapting to the latest trends. More and more, record labels are becoming a thing of the past, replaced by streaming platforms, aggregators, branding and sync agencies. The one constant that remains is that great music can always find its audience. I can help you navigate this new world order and chart your own course.
At the end of Music Business Foundations you'll be able to:
  • Fully comprehend the way the music business works TODAY
  • Improve your art AND the way you do business
  • Understand the increasingly limited role that record labels play, but also appreciate the services and guidance they can provide under the right circumstances
  • Know the difference between the different streaming services and what they offer
  • Appreciate the difference between mechanicals and publishing, and know how both sides of the coin can help you monetize your music
  • Assess your own music to know what to lead with when you play it for potential partners and backers
  • Manage your own expectations and know what to expect of potential members of your team
  • Set for yourself a realistic series of goals, and most importantly, lay out NEXT STEPS that are achievable to help get you there
  • Grasp the different distributors and aggregators who can help you release your music independently and ensure it's available on all the streaming services
  • Have a plan for how to set yourself up to independently publish your music

2

Next Level Business 1
In this module, we will focus on your goals and aspirations, balancing that with managing your expectations so that you can reach a realistic set of goals that will be exciting and fulfilling to achieve. You already understand the basics of today's music industry, so now it's time to dig deeper and apply your new knowledge to what YOU do.
At the end of Next Level Business 1 you'll be able to:
  • Skillfully pitch your music--I will help you learn how to craft the best pitch that is focused, interesting and most of all PROFESSIONAL
  • Develop a multi-faceted plan for putting your music out in the world--it's much more than your songs and recordings
  • Assess your own work--identifying not only your favorites, but the tracks that might appeal to the widest audience
  • Fully understand the lingo of the music world and be able to engage with people in the industry with knowledge and savvy
  • Examine the career trajectory of artists you admire so that you understand the steps they took to reach their levels of success
  • Explain the differences in income from streaming, physical sales and downloads
  • Grasp the strengths and weaknesses of all the major streaming services, and understand how streams equal money for an artist's bottom line
  • Be fully prepared for your next release--sign up with a performing rights society (i.e. BMI/ASCAP), place your music with sync agencies, and have it available in all the places so that people around the world can discover your music
  • Critically assess what you're doing that ISN'T working so that you can pivot when necessary
  • Be prepared for the potential costs: the plusses and minuses of hiring people for your team to support a release (like PR, marketing, and radio promotion)

3

Next Level Business 2
In this module, I'll get into the nuances of all the areas of the music industry, using real world examples, with a special focus on the work YOU are doing. We'll go deep into the topics that are of primary interest to you; I will be your resource and guide to help you move your music forward in the ways that make the most sense for you.
At the end of Next Level Business 2 you'll be able to:
  • Cite real life examples of different artists today who have become successful today on their own terms, and still grasp the work they have ahead of them in order to maintain and grow that success
  • Spot new trends in the music industry and find your own way to use them
  • Fully grasp what being a touring artist really means--the expenses, logistics and rigor of life on the road, and what it takes to get there
  • Understand what it means to be a professional touring DJ
  • Know what kinds of questions to ask of people you want to work with
  • Intuit when you're being overly ambitious and not focused enough on the immediate tasks you need to fulfill
  • Find your sweet spot more easily--those things you "do best", that will have the most appeal and will help you grow your audience the most rapidly
  • Appreciate the hard work that a manager puts in on behalf of their artists, and know what it takes to work well in partnership with them
  • Understand some of the wrong steps that many artists take which can greatly reduce any potential momentum
  • Embark on your next music adventure with an engaged and refreshed sense of purpose and focus
