Program Overview
Next Level Composition

The Next Level Sound Composition Course provides you with a proven system to create the melodies, harmonies and structure to build memorable tracks. Starting with the music theory basics and going on a journey through composition and into orchestration, you will learn how chart topping tracks in any genre are created. Through working alongside your mentor, Award-Winning composer Kristin Hevner, our students have gone from struggling to finish tracks to consistently finishing tracks that have gone on to major labels. The best part is that you can do that, too.

The secret to consistently producing commercial quality tracks is to have the right toolkit that you can access at any point of the creative process. There is a systematic approach that you will learn at Next Level Sound which will become your secret recipe for success.

The program is for you if:
  • You get stuck turning an 8 bar loop into a full track
  • You don’t understand when and why certain notes work with each other
  • You struggle to ‘ear’ what other artists are doing to create the magic
  • You currently have ‘A’ and ‘B’ sections but nothing to join them
  • You want to remix other people’s tracks and don’t know music theory
  • You need more creativity in your song writing
Program Contents

The Program is Divided Into 3 Courses

1

Composition Foundations
This is the most fundamental part of the system. We go back to basics and put all the music theory foundations in place. It is great for beginners or a refresh for those with some music theory background. The lessons from Composition Foundations make it a lot easier to learn more advanced skills later in the course.
At the end of Composition Foundations you'll be able to:
  • How to detect and use Key Signatures
  • What the Intervals Maj/min of a scale are
  • How to use Chords, Triads and Inversions
  • How to detect intervals and chords
  • How Western scales and modes work
  • Why Consonance and Dissonance are important
  • The extra Chord options (Seventh and Ninths)
  • How to deconstruct your favourite tracks

2

Next Level Composition
In this module we begin to explore more advanced composition. This is where we look more closely at the toolkit you will use to create better tracks, faster. You will also get to work on your own track with your mentor and find answers to your specific composition challenges.
At the end of Next Level Composition you'll be able to:
  • Use the Circle of fifths and Camelot wheel
  • Create a more diverse track that heightens the storyline by accentuation major and minor to intensify the mood
  • Use the hierarchy of scale (tonic, dominant, leading tone etc.)
  • Bring tension and release as you need them
  • Write stronger melodies and chord progressions
  • Use Counterpoint, and other ‘tricks’ for when you get stuck
  • Use concepts that will give illusion of your track getting bigger or smaller
  • Know when and how to add instruments to build your mix
  • Create stronger drops
  • Write a relatable chord progression to your pre-existing melody
  • Write a relatable melody to your chord progression
  • Write a bassline from your melody or chord progression.

3

Next Level Orchestration
In this module we build upon the core Next Level Composition techniques and move onto the artistry of orchestration. This module is all about how we take strong melody and chord progressions and build them out into fully developed tracks. You will study a range of genres from classics to EDM to learn the core principles that are universal across all genres so that you can apply them to your own tracks. This is how you come to develop as a producer rather than follow only genre specific examples that limit your possibilities. Once again, you will get to work on your own tracks with your mentor.
At the end of Next Level Orchestration you'll be able to:
  • Apply different voicing to your chords
  • Write for multiple vocal parts
  • Know which timbres complement or distract from each other
  • Dissect themes and trace them through your composition
  • Create tracks at a far more professional level
  • Develop your ideas into full pieces faster and without the blocks

Testimonials
Student Successes
John Dawes
Fort Collins, USA
I loved that I learned more about certain aspects of composition than in the 4 years of schooling I paid a lot of money for. While a lot of the course was a review, Kristin had experience in the real world writing music as opposed to my professors in the Academic world mostly teaching theory and sharing very little experience.
Matt Winter
NYC, USA
Loved the class! I highly recommend this class to anyone looking to take their Composition to the next level. Kristin was amazing and very helpful!
Stefan
Amsterdam, NL
I'm a self taught musician, and although I thought that I had a good idea of theory, I pretty much knew only the basics. This course threw me in the deep end, but Kristin was there all the way to prevent me from drowning and my knowledge of theory has improved considerably.
